Trend Spotting: Colour of the year 2021
Hello everyone! I hope everyone has had a great week! It’s been a busy one on my end but i’m loving it. I’m bring you a very short post today as I make some major preparations for a Halloween special….want a hint?

Anyway for today I just wanted to touch on what we know about Colour of the year 2021 across the industry.

Dulux: Brave Ground
Dulux announced on 8th September that their Colour of the Year for 2021 is called Brave Ground. According to the brand the shade is a ‘warm earthy tone which provides a firm foundation for change and creativity in your home’. We know that Dulux loves to choose a muted and natural tone, looking back on this years colour Tranquil Dawn and 2019’s colour Spiced Honey. I think with all of the chaos that the world has been feeling, the main comfort we’ve felt is being at home. By choosing this colour it not only fits with the ‘new neutrals’ trend we’ve seen introduced this year but as the brand said, it can literally keep us calm and grounded at home. It’s a very clever choice on their behalf and it’s a huge thumbs up from me, for both its versatility and calming qualities.

Graham & Brown: Epoch
Graham & Brown announced their colour ‘Epoch’ on 9th September, just one day after the Dulux announcement. According to the brand this is a ‘directional shade of plum’ and although I wouldn’t normally gravitate towards it, I can definitely appreciate this choice of colour. It has a warm and comfy feel to it, creating a sense of happiness in your space. I do however think that this shade should be chosen to use wisely. If you have a stately home or a period home, this could be the statement colour you’ve waited for, highlighting those character features in a decadent fashion. Working in these larger areas in most areas of the home. When it comes to new build houses or smaller apartments, unless your rooms are very much west facing, this colour could make it feel smaller in size. However, it’s not all a loss… you could 100% use this colour alongside a beautiful off white shade and create a two tone wall or an accent wall of sorts. Although the colour is bold overall, the tone is earthy and that is the key to its versatility.
WGSN & Coloro: A.I. Aqua
Coloro have technically released their colours for 2022 already! Lets just rewind a little and see what they pulled together for 2021 though. Their palette includes Good Gray, Lemon Sherbet, Oxy Fire, A.I. Aqua and Quiet Wave. Out of them all the brand has chosen A.I. Aqua to represent their colour of the year 2021 across all industries. It’s predicted that A.I. Aqua is a nod to the digital era with the coming of new technology and augmented reality. It gives a very modern almost futuristic feel. I think if you’re looking to make a HUGE statement then it could be an uplifting blue tone to add to your home. However, I do think that we will see this colour added through our accent pieces mainly and possibly a new colour to consider for kitchens of the future.

Pantone are due to announce their colour around December and just for fun I wanted to pop down some predictions! So based on the previous years, the main source of ‘sneak peeks’ tend to come from Fashion week where Pantone hand pick a colour palette. If we look back at previous years I think we’re also due a yellow or orange. Mimosa was the Colour of the year in 2009 but since then we’ve not seen a yellow appear and the closest we got to an orange, were Tigerlily (2004) and Tangerine Tango (2012). Also, the theme for other brands choosing their colours seems to be to create cosiness and joy. I’ve narrowed down a couple of predictions; Lemon Zest, Celery and Misted Marigold. Lemon Zest is the brightest yellow and part of me thinks that Pantone will choose a brighter yellow to set the stage for a brighter year in 2021, however, it doesn't fit with the muted tones we’ve seen. For that we look at Celery and Misted Marigold, green-yellow and a gold-yellow respectively. Green has seen a HUGE rise in popularity so a mix of that and a yellow could be fitting to keep up appearances, whereas Misted marigold eliminates the green and focuses on the golden yellow shades that are earthy but radiate happiness. Lets see what they end up choosing, it could be completely WILD!
